I had a random idea and also wanted to step out of my comfort zone.

(I’m a nervous speaker, so.)

Now that we talk about it, all the massive things I’ve done are a result of random experiments. My cohort-based course is born out of a tweet, a single tweet!

So this time, I thought — why not do a webinar?

And no, not a webinar where my sole purpose is to sell something.

But just sit for 60 minutes and teach what I know. And so I started.

How I Got People To Sign Up

I posted about it on LinkedIn a week prior.

Tweeted about it.

Plugged it into my newsletter

On LinkedIn, I later posted two more times just to make some noise and reach out to those who might’ve missed out on it.

1349 people signed up. Yes, that’s the power of making some noise on the internet and having a strong foundation of work that vouches for you.

What Was The Webinar About?

I spoke about growing on Medium.

Since Medium released a statement that they’re opening doors to more countries, this felt like the perfect opportunity to strike the iron when it's hot. Especially because this entry included my own country, India.

And Indians make up the largest portion of my audience across social networking platforms.

How Many People Showed Up?

There were 648 people at the most.

500 stayed till the end.

440+ stayed even once we finished an hour and went overtime for around 20 minutes.

There were 992 questions — I obviously could not answer them all.

I tried to answer whatever I could though.

What Did People Say?

I got around 150 testimonials on the platform,

So, How Did You Make Money?

I opened ‘pay what you want’ option in this webinar.

So while the webinar was free, some people chose to pay anywhere between ₹100-₹1000 ($2-$12).

This accounted to $414.30.

Then, I mentioned in the end,

No hard sales because the intention was clear — I want to do this for free.

But if somebody wants to dig deeper and can benefit from my guide, then the offer is for them to take.

I emailed them twice about it when the deadline was approaching.

And that made me ~$993.28.

My Process — Summed Up

I created a landing page to take webinar registrations.

I enabled ‘pay what you want’ so those who want to pay can pay. Those who don’t can enter zero and move on.

At the end of the webinar, I mentioned an offer on my Medium Guide and didn’t bother with any hard sell. Take it if it helps you, ignore it if it doesn’t.

I sent two follow-up emails about downloading the webinar recording and grabbing the Medium Guide offer.

I requested testimonials.

The kind words on LinkedIn, though, are written by their own will.

So How Can *You* Make Money Doing This?

Here’s a step-by-step process I recommend:

1. Start creating content around what you enjoy talking about or have expertise in. This way, you get to be known for something.
   ​
2. Build an audience in this process by interacting with them, and writing solutions to questions they ask the most. Give them value so they keep coming back to you.
   ​
3. Experiment with something funky, like doing a free webinar. Please give them your knowledge for free and enable pay-what-you-want so those who want to can pay for it.
   ​
4. Ask for testimonials because they build trust for future events.
   ​
5. Be patient. I conducted a webinar on writing on Medium after 34 months of writing there. Don’t expect results too quick.
   ​
6. Don’t be too salesy, be honest instead. I know that not everyone needs my Medium Guide, so I didn’t make it sound like their success depends on it.
   ​
7. Do various experiments, you never know what will work.
